Flying Business Class with British Airways – A Rare Treat

Flying Business Class with British Airways – A Honeymoon Treat

Business Class is usually well out of reach for most trips. It’s expensive, and while you can sometimes find reward seats or good deals, it takes time, flexibility and a lot of searching.

Cards on the table — we didn’t do any of that for this journey.

Instead, we were lucky enough that family members who work for a major international airline were able to nominate us for standby staff travel for our honeymoon.

If you’ve never flown standby before, it means your seat isn’t guaranteed. You only travel if there’s space available — but the upside is that if seats are left in a higher cabin, that’s where you could end up.

This time, luck was definitely on our side. Two Business Class seats became available.

It was our first ever Business Class experience across all of our travels. We don’t tend to stick to one airline — most of our trips end up with a mix of British Airways, Emirates, easyJet, United and Southwest — so this felt like a real one-off and a pretty special way to start our honeymoon.

First impressions? Excellent.

From the moment we boarded, the cabin crew couldn’t have been more attentive. Once we’d settled in, menus were handed out and our pre-departure drinks were taken.

When the crew found out we were travelling on our honeymoon, they went a step further and presented us with a bottle of champagne to take with us — a really thoughtful touch that made the experience feel even more memorable.

After take-off came the full meal service, followed by the real highlight — the lie-flat bed. On the A350, your seat is controlled by a simple panel that lets you adjust it into different positions, including fully flat.

Honestly, it was the most comfortable flight we’ve ever had. After a few hours of proper sleep, the rest of the journey flew by, with another round of food and drinks helping to pass the remaining time.

Would we pay full price for Business Class every time? Probably not.

But if you ever get the chance to try it — whether through points, a deal, or a bit of luck like we had — it’s definitely worth experiencing at least once.
