Why Manchester is a Plane Spotter’s Dream
Manchester Airport is one of the best places in the UK for plane spotting outside of London. With two full-length runways and a huge mix of airlines, you’ll see everything from short-haul Ryanair hops to long-haul heavies heading to the US, Middle East and beyond.

📍 The Runways
Manchester operates:
- Runway 23L / 05R
- Runway 23R / 05L
The active runway depends on wind direction, but 23 operations (landing from the east, departing to the west) are very common.

1️⃣ Runway Visitor Park (RVP)
The official viewing area at Manchester.
Highlights:
- Raised viewing mounds
- Cafe and facilities
- Concorde on display
- Great views of Runway 23R/05L
You’ll often get close-up rotation shots here when departures are using 23L.
Perfect if you’re bringing family or want an easy first visit.
2️⃣ The Mounds (23L Approach)
For landing shots when 23L is active, the perimeter mounds near the approach give fantastic head-on and touchdown views.
These are more “proper spotter” locations:
- No facilities
- Bring your own snacks
- Check local parking rules
But the shots? Worth it.
Note – the mounds are very slippy in wet wether. Having experienced this a few times myself, make sure you take sensible shoes and wet weather clothing!
3️⃣ Cargo & Remote Stands
Manchester gets regular visits from:
- Emirates A380
- Qatar 787/777
- Singapore Airlines A350
- TUI Dreamliners
- Various cargo operators
Cargo movements are usually best caught from the perimeter roads with a long lens.

- Visitor Park: 70–300mm is usually perfect
- Approach mounds: 100–400mm gives flexibility
- Taxiway shots: 200mm+ recommended

⏰ Best Times to Visit
Manchester is busy all day, but:
- Morning (7am–10am): Long-haul departures
- Midday: European heavies and Emirates arrivals
- Late afternoon: US departures
- Golden hour: 1–2 hours before sunset for dramatic landing shots
Winter often brings better light angles for photography.

- Stay outside airport fencing
- Respect local residents
- Don’t block gates or roads
- Be polite if security ask questions
