If you’re into aviation — whether you’re a seasoned spotter or just enjoy watching aircraft come and go — Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) is one of the easiest and most relaxed airports in the UK to visit.
It’s compact, friendly, and you can get surprisingly close to the action if you know where to go. Here are the best places to watch the movements.
1. The Official Viewing Area (off Hale Road)
W3W Location – https://w3w.co/contracts.inspector.garden
This is the main spotting area and the best place to start. There’s:
- A raised viewing mound
- “Parking” – it’s pretty much just a bit of gravel an lots of pot holes!
- Clear views of arrivals and departures on runway 27
- Enough space to set up a camera without getting in anyone’s way
Tip: A 70–300mm lens is ideal here.
2. Speke Hall Grounds (For a Scenic Option)
If you want a more relaxed day out, the grounds of Speke Hall offer a great alternative. There are two places I’ve found are great to get some pictures.
- As you pass the play area on the right-hand side, there’s a path which is a little hilly, along which there are benches. As you get to the top of this hill and turn around, you’ll get a clear view of the airfield.
W3W Location – https://w3w.co/straws.jaundice.jiggle - Instead of heading up the footpath, carry straight on and you’ll end up on the tarmac on the opposite side of Runway 09. Great way to catch planes overhead.

3. Hale Village (For Approach Shots)
For something a bit different, head to Hale Village.
You’ll get fantastic head-on or low approach shots as aircraft line up for runway 27. It’s quieter than the main viewing area and great if you prefer fewer crowds.
Just be respectful of residents and park sensibly.
What You’ll See at LPL
Liverpool isn’t as busy as Manchester, you’ll typically see 737’s and A319/A320 aircraft. Expect:
- Regular Ryanair and easyJet traffic
- Holiday charters and seasonal routes
- The occasional interesting visitor or diversion
- Cargo and business aviation movements
Check Flight Radar 24 before you head out.
Best Times to Visit
- Morning (6–9am): Busy departure wave
- Afternoon: Good mix of arrivals and turnarounds
Wind direction matters — most spotting locations work best when runway 27 is active.
Final Thoughts
Liverpool John Lennon Airport might be small, but for plane spotters it’s one of the easiest and most enjoyable airports to visit. Good access, friendly atmosphere, and the chance to get properly close to the action — without the crowds you’ll find at larger airports.
Whether you’re there for serious photography or just a quick aviation fix, LPL is well worth a visit.
